Wood's Gain Bed and Breakfast

Our home is currently on the market for sale after our rewarding 12 years as a B&B.  We are not selling our B&B business as a "turn key" operation per say but, given the right buyer, many things here can/may be available to the new owner -- such as this website, the Wood's Gain name, clientele list, some furnishings etc.  Please contact us, or Gary Gestson from Long and Foster, if you or anyone you know might be interested in our home and this home-based business opportunity.

We have listed our home with Gary Gestson and

The Historic Homes Team

You can find all the pertinent information about our home and listing on line at their website.

Please see additional information below.

Due to the sale of our home, we are not accepting further reservations at the B&B.

We sincerely appreciate and are grateful for your continued patronage, support and friendship over the last 12 years that we have operated our Bed & Breakfast.  It has been a fun, enriching and rewarding experience for us.

Best wishes and safe travels,

Bev & Steve Kerkam

If you are in need of lodging in our area, we suggest that you contact the Atlee House B&B in New Windsor, Maryland -- just 2.5 miles from us.  Sam and Doris Ann Pierce are the Innkeepers and Sam is the Mayor of New Windsor.  They have a beautiful home and Doris Ann is a wonderful cook with many great recipes for your breakfast.  We are confident that you will really enjoy a stay at their historic home.

Wood's Gain Bed and Breakfast is an "earth-friendly" eco-tourism supporter.  We do the following things at our bed and breakfast located in the country environs of Carroll County, Maryland:

We  recycle our paper, glass and plastics.

We use organic food ingredients in some of our recipes.

We conserve water and have a new well with a filtration system.

We have energy efficient appliances such as our new washer and dryer.

We promote nature with our fresh flowers, attracting birds, our rose garden and pastoral setting.

We are near the mountains, streams and are on a local scenic bike route in the county.

A Maryland Bed and Breakfast, Wood's Gain Bed and Breakfast is located in Carroll County in the historic Village of Linwood, Maryland. Rooted in the happy past of the 19th Century, Linwood maintains its mellow brick buildings, mill, farms, barns and white steepled church and provides travelers with a warm, friendly hospitality based upon two centuries of tradition. Take a walk through the village and enjoy the pastoral countryside of the Priestland Valley. For over 100 years, the five story grain elevator stored grain for the local farmers. On Sunday, the Linwood Brethren Church, built in 1905 in "country gothic" style, welcomes visitors.

Linwood is significant as it is on the National Historic Registry as the Linwood Historic District.

Our completely restored brick house, the oldest in the village, was built in 1866 by Josiah Englar who purchased the property as part of the tract of land for which the B&B is named. Wood's Gain's unique features include five fireplaces, four stairways, the Parlor, the front porch with swing, the Summer Kitchen and, for the adventurous, the old outhouse in the back.

The original Englar General Store, built in 1877, is still part of the property, as is the Grain Elevator, the second oldest one in the United States still standing..

Wood's Gain is a "Home Stay" B&B and is the full time residence of Beverly and Stephen Kerkam.

While staying at Wood's Gain, enjoy sitting on the front porch, playing the old upright piano or phonograph or reading a book and relaxing in the Parlor or in the hammock in the backyard. The guest rooms, with renovated private baths, are furnished in comfortable elegance. You will enjoy the antiquity, but not at the expense of a good night's sleep. The Rose Garden is the perfect setting for breakfast, afternoon refreshments or quiet reflection.  We have numerous rose bushes all over the property and a beautiful rose arbor as you enter from the front street.

Morning begins your day with a hearty full breakfast featuring apple butter, muffins and breads, fruit and juices, freshly ground coffee or tea, an egg dish or other mouth-watering delight. Guests rave about our Stuffed French Toast, our Crepes a la Linwood and our new Cr'Omelette.  We make our own apple butter in the fall with apples from our trees.  We also have peach and pear trees for fruit in season, as well as tomatoes and melons in the garden.

We always use our best china and silver to serve our guests. Continue your stay by visiting antique shops, sightseeing, biking, hiking, golfing or fishing. Tennis courts, wineries, parks, churches, theaters and restaurants are within a short drive. Westminster, the county seat for Carroll County and home of McDaniel College, formerly Western Maryland College, and the Farm Museum, is just 10 minutes away.  Union Mills Homestead is 15 minutes away and Gettysburg, PA is a 30 minutes drive.

Remember Wood's Gain B&B for those special occasions -- birthdays, anniversaries, romantic getaways, honeymoons or festival weekends, such as the Maryland Wine Festival. Experience the memorable elegance of an era long gone in our home with its simple yet gracious hospitality.
